Noon Flowers in the River event by ILWU Local 8 Rank and File
May first is International Workers Day, celebrated the world over to remember the fight for the eight hour day in the United States. This year Local 8 rank and file are co-sponsoring the 4pm Rally and March for Immigrants Rights and Workers' Rights (see announcement below) and are also sponsoring a noon event against the Iraq war.
Local 8 rank and file have long opposed the War on Iraq. We are lifting our voices once again against this war and calling for a safe and immediate return of our troops. More than 4,000 U.S. Soldiers and at least 100,000 Iraqi citizens have died. Further, this war is costing our federal treasury more than 3 trillion dollars – funds that would be better spent on health care, education and other working family needs.
In protest of the terrible loss of life, we will place 800 flowers in the Willamette River to commemorate the 4,000 U.S. soldiers and 100,000 civilians who have died.
This Flowers in the River event will take place on the floating dock just North of the Burnside Bridge. There is a stairway from the Burnside Bridge going down to the Esplanade on the South side of the bridge above the east bank. There is also access at the East end of the Morrison Bridge.
All are welcome.
